Solutions for sloping and uneven gardens
A sloping garden is not a lost cause. It is a levels problem with well-established solutions.
Terracing
Splitting a slope into two or three level platforms is almost always better than trying to force it flat. Each terrace gets a purpose — dining, lawn, seating — and the retaining structures become part of the design rather than an engineering afterthought.
Retaining structures
- Timber sleepers for modest retained heights and a softer look
- Blockwork with a rendered or stone-clad face for taller retention
- Gabions where drainage behind the wall is a concern
- Proper drainage behind every retaining structure, without exception
Steps and circulation
Steps should be generous, consistent and lit if they are used after dark. A shallow, wide flight feels far better in a garden than a tight domestic-stair pitch, and it makes the change of level feel deliberate.
Artificial grass on slopes
Artificial grass can be installed on a gentle gradient without difficulty. On steeper falls we usually recommend terracing first, both for usability and because a level lawn is far more practical for children and furniture.
