Building it properly
The frame is the part nobody sees and the part that decides how long the deck lasts. We set posts on solid footings, keep joist centres tight enough for the board being used, allow airflow beneath the deck and lay a membrane below to keep growth down.
Boards are fitted with consistent expansion gaps and, on composite installations, with the manufacturer's own clip system so there are no exposed screw heads.

- Is composite decking slippery?
- Modern composite boards have a textured surface and perform well in wet weather. As with any outdoor surface, a build-up of algae in permanently shaded areas should be washed off occasionally.
- Do I need planning permission for decking?
- Low-level decking usually falls within permitted development, but raised decking near a boundary can be a different matter. We will raise it at the survey if we think your project needs checking with the local authority.
- Can decking be combined with artificial grass?
- Yes, and it is a combination that works well. A deck by the house for seating and an artificial lawn beyond it gives a low-maintenance garden that is usable all year.
