Ask these ten questions and the differences between three quotations become obvious.
About the work
- What depth will you excavate to, and why?
- What material is the sub-base, and how will it be compacted?
- What edging is included, and how is it fixed?
- What happens if the garden holds water?
- Is waste removal included in the price?
About the company
- Will your own team carry out the work, or subcontractors?
- Are you insured, and can you confirm the cover?
- Can I see recent work of a similar type nearby?
- What is the expected duration, and what could delay it?
- What are the payment terms, and is a deposit required?
Reading the answers
Vague answers to the groundwork questions are the clearest warning sign. Any competent installer can tell you the excavation depth and the base build-up without hesitating, because those are the decisions the whole job rests on.
