How to clean and maintain artificial grass

Artificial grass is low maintenance, not no maintenance. Twenty minutes a season keeps it looking new.

Routine care

  • Brush the pile against its lay with a stiff broom every few months
  • Remove leaves and debris before they break down into the pile
  • Rinse the surface with a hose in dry spells and after pet use
  • Lift and reposition heavy furniture occasionally

Seasonal jobs

In autumn, keep on top of leaf fall — decomposing organic matter is what feeds moss and weeds on the surface. In spring, give the whole lawn a proper power brush to lift the pile after winter.

Dealing with algae and moss

Permanently shaded areas can develop a green film. A diluted artificial-grass-safe cleaner and a stiff brush will clear it. Avoid bleach, jet washers on a narrow setting and anything that could damage the backing.

Spills and stains

Most spills lift with warm water and mild detergent. Chewing gum can be hardened with an ice pack and lifted. Barbecues and fire pits should sit on a slab, not directly on the grass.
