Choosing the right garden fencing
Fencing is the fastest way to change how a garden feels, and the easiest place to buy the wrong thing.
Closeboard fencing
Built board by board on site over arris rails, closeboard is the strongest common option and the one we recommend for long or exposed boundaries. Individual boards can be replaced without dismantling the run.
Panel fencing
Lap and overlap panels are quicker and cheaper and work well in sheltered gardens. They are the most vulnerable to wind damage, so post fixing and spacing matter.
Slatted and contemporary screening
Horizontal slatted panels suit modern gardens and seating areas, and are often used for a single feature run rather than the whole boundary. Gaps between slats reduce wind loading noticeably.
Posts and gravel boards
- Concrete posts outlast timber but are visually heavier
- Timber posts suit traditional gardens; use pressure-treated stock
- Concrete gravel boards keep timber out of ground contact
- Post spacing should suit the panel or board type, not the other way round
